The journey of River Vale as a modern township began in 1906 when some portions of Hillsdale Township and Washington Township got included in its formation. In 1959, additional portions from Montvale got added to the township. The town seeks inspiration for its naming from the Hackensack River, which flows on the outskirts of the township. River Vale holds the record of the lowest ever temperature recorded in the history of New Jersey, which fell to -34 degrees Celcius.
While the northern part of River Vale has sloping hills, the eastern part has Lake Tappan. The western and southern areas of the township include sections of land defined by a creek and Cedar Lane. Most of these lands developed as residential areas of New Jersey real estate for suburban single families in recent years. Other unpopulated parts of the township are covered by woods, which also include the Pascack Brook County Park.
